Are you a fan of music and the circus? If the answer is yes, then this is the perfect movie for you. It's an utterly breathtaking masterpiece directed by Michael Gracey, based on a true story of the greatest showman in history: Phineas Taylor Barnum.

Well, the reality is a bit disappointing because Barnum was actually a terrible person known for promoting hoaxes and exploiting anyone he could earn money from. Don't let that stop you from watching this marvellous work of art though. The movie, which came out in 2017, is quite different from the original tale and became an incredible success, despite mediocre reviews and massive hate from the critics who called it a massive commercial failure. It eventually grossed $435 million on a budget of $84 million.

The setting is just what you would expect from the 19th century New York City and features real-life buildings which let the audience truly experience the atmosphere of that time. The movie positions itself as a story celebrating diversity and acceptance but it's important not to forget it is still connected to exploitation. Barnum offered a home to those whom the society branded as freaks and rejected them. The film contains 11 songs, all of which send a powerful message and tell a story which isn't that surprising as it's a musical. However, the astonishing performance of Hugh Jackman who plays Barnum is not to be underestimated. As bright as he can shine, you simply cannot forget the rest of the cast who truly embodied the characters they played. Whether it is the romance between Phillip (Zac Efron) and Anne (Zendaya) along their love song "Rewrite the Stars" or Lettie's (Keala Settle) anthemic "This Is Me" that steals your heart, it's up to you. The overall message supports diversity, unity and in the end humility.

I cannot recommend it highly enough. The story, characters and the music never cease to amaze me. It is undoubtedly a great experience fit for the whole family. In the end, it is important not to forget the true story which was overshadowed by the positivity the movie displayed. You should definitely hear both sides.
